Our
Story

The Free Korean Association stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of North Korean refugees who found a new home in America. Founded in collaboration with these brave individuals, our organization arose from a shared commitment to shedding light on the untold stories of those who have suffered under the North Korean regime.

Our journey is deeply intertwined with the personal experiences of North Korean refugees who escaped unimaginable hardships. Through their trials of escape, loss of loved ones, and pursuit of freedom, our members have found strength in unity and a renewed purpose – advocating for the rights of those left behind.

The creation of this memorial project is a commitment to remembering the victims; welcoming and paying tribute to those who escaped; and shedding light on all those still held in captivity. It's an important chapter in our ongoing story of resilience, hope, and the unwavering pursuit of justice. Join us as we share our collective narrative, standing together to ensure that the stories of North Korean refugees and the countless silent voices are heard and honored.

Our
Initiatives

1. Memorial Project:
The mission of the Free Korean Association, in collaboration with North Korean refugees residing in the United States, is to establish a memorial space in Washington, D.C. that pays solemn tribute to the countless victims of the North Korean regime. Our mission extends beyond commemorating the estimated 3 million lives tragically lost; it encompasses fostering empathy, raising awareness about human rights abuses, and creating a platform for education, dialogue, and advocacy.

2. Educational Programs:
Hosting events and programs to inform the public about the human rights challenges faced by the North Korean people, creating a platform for dialogue and advocacy.

3. Settlement Support:
Strengthening the successful settlement of North Koreans who have found refuge in the U.S., and fostering a supportive environment for their integration into society.

4. Support for second-generation North Korean refugees
Recognizing the unique challenges faced by the second generation of North Korean escapees, we are committed to educational initiatives to promote greater understanding of the impact on their lives of North Korea’s history. Through tailored programs, we aim to empower and assist the children of North Korean refugees in overcoming problems of identity, fostering resilience, and ensuring a brighter future for the next generation.

5. Global Unity:
Uniting people worldwide, including in the U.S. and South Korea, who share an interest in improving human rights conditions in North Korea.
